If ever there was a superhero of dental procedures, the root canal would have to be pretty high on the list. Even so, it has one of the worst reputations of dental procedures around. How can something so helpful be considered so scary? A lot of it has to do with poor media. When a movie or television show wants to make a dental patient scared, they put a root canal on their horizon! In reality, though, a root canal is a tooth-saving procedure that is no less comfortable than having a cavity filled.
The Problem: Infected Tooth
Your tooth becomes infected when bacteria is able to work its way deep into the dentin and pulp on the inside of your tooth. This is sometimes very painful, but with routine appointments, we are able to catch an infection before it causes too much discomfort. If left untreated, the infection will kill the tooth, causing it to be lost.
The Solution: Root Canal
In order to save your tooth, we must remove the infection. We do this is the same way that we do a filling for a cavity. We remove the problem area, and fill it with a new material. A root canal, of course, requires deeper cleaning, but your entire tooth will be numb while we work. Once we remove the pulp and clean the dentin tubes, we will place a special filling and a crown to keep your tooth safe from further infections.
