Blame Bacteria for Bad Breath; Then, Get Rid of It!

We want to introduce you to someone you know: the bad breath friend. Maybe you knew him when you were in school. Maybe you know him now. He’s the friend who automatically makes you hold your breath. When this friend wants to talk one on one, you find a way to breathe clean air without looking obvious.

When you have a friend, co-worker, or family member who struggles with halitosis (bad breath), it can be really difficult to be around them sometimes. You don’t want to tell them they have bad breath, you also don’t want to suffer!

What if you are the bad breath friend? What do you do if you are the one that everyone avoids? If you are struggling with bad breath, you need to come to Precise Dental right here in Houston so that we can figure out what’s causing your problem and get you back to fresh breath!

Bad Breath Ruins Relationships

The little story we told above about your bad breath friend is all too accurate. Chances are pretty great that you immediately thought of someone! The question is, does anyone think that about you? Bad breath is more than an annoyance. It can actually ruin relationships, sometimes before they’ve even begun!

Work– Imagine walking into work but no one wants you to stop by their desk to chat! Your work relationships suffer when no one can stand to be around you when you talk. This is especially true for managers and supervisors who are needing to interact with co-workers on a regular basis.

Personal – Friendships, dates, and spouses are all affected by the smell of your breath. These are the people who are closest to you (and if you aren’t sure if you have a problem, these are the folks you should ask!). Could you imagine going on a first date and not getting a second because of your breath?

Family – Your family is very important to you, and they aren’t going to abandon you completely because of your breath, but they are affected as well. It’s difficult to have a close and meaningful conversation with a loved one who has stinky breath!

Most Causes Link to Bacteria

For the most part, bad breath is caused by one of the following things. There are exceptions, but these are the top three that we see here in the office. You will notice that each reason is linked directly to bacteria in your mouth!

Decay – Cavities are often a cause of bad breath. The bacteria that are causing the cavities are also causing bad breath! We see this in patients who haven’t dealt with their teeth in a long time.

Gum Disease – Another common cause of bad breath is gum disease. Gum disease happens when bacteria builds up below your gum line. That bacteria harms your gums, but it also produces a poor smell that comes out in your breath.

Poor Food Choice – Some foods and drinks that you choose are not good for your breath, either! Sugary food and beverages often coat your tongue with residue that allows for the growth (and smell) of bacteria.

Developing a Plan to Get Your Smile Back

In order to get your life and confidence back, you need to deal with the issue at hand. Simply popping mints day in and day out will not solve the problem! In many cases, it makes the problem worse! Take a look at the things we can do right here in the office to help you have a healthier, more pleasant mouth!

Begin with a breath analysis

Our work begins with a breath analysis. We take a look at your oral health and habits to determine where the problem could be. Once we have pinpointed the issue, we will do one of the following to correct it:

Restorations – For patients suffering from cavities and decay, we will use fillings, crowns, and bridges to restore your mouth back to normal. Once your teeth are healthy, you will see a marked improvement in the way your breath smells.

Gum Disease Treatment – If gum disease is affecting your breath, we can help you take care of the problem by treating your infection! A deep clean is often all it takes to clear the harmful bacteria away and restore your fresh breath.

Oral Hygiene – Some people we see just don’t know some of the ins and outs of oral hygiene. We can help you learn to care for your tongue, teeth, and gums so that you have a fresh, healthy mouth!
